Located just steps from the Italian-Swiss border, the grotto has spanned over a century of history, becoming a meeting place for travelers, families, soldiers, and smugglers during the two world wars.
Nestled in the greenery next to the historic 16th-century church of Santa Margherita, the grotto still retains the authentic charm of Ticino tradition. Among its most distinctive features are the frescoes painted by Nicola Manghera himself in 1943, depicting General Henri Guisan, Helvetia, and William Tell. Symbols of the Swiss Confederation adorn the wall facing the Italian border, a historical and artistic testament to an era marked by war and territorial defense.
Renowned for its cheeses, cured meats, and "alla buona" dinners, the Grotto Santa Margherita continues to be a symbol of conviviality and historical memory in the Mendrisiotto region.
