Sustainability

This institutional page is designed to guide our partners through the landscape of sustainability initiatives, offering tools and resources to support a more responsible tourism offering.

Swisstainable Destination

Thanks to its ongoing commitment and a shared vision with several regional partners, OTRMBC was able to put the region forward for assessment and obtain the Swisstainable Destination Level I - committed classification from the Swiss Tourism Federation. This recognition reflects the work carried out with local partners to bring together the region’s natural and cultural heritage, local communities, wine and gastronomy, and sports and leisure activities, while promoting sustainable regional development.

Our commitment

We have been part of the Swisstainable programme launched by Switzerland Tourism since 2022. In 2024, we updated our action plan and prepared the simplified CSR sustainability report (Italian version) of the Ticino Chamber of Commerce for 2023. We received a declaration of compliance with a score of 28 out of 30 points. This document, together with the OK:GO certificate obtained in 2021, enabled us to reach Swisstainable Level II - engaged. Our ambition is clear: We are committed to making our destination more sustainable through an authentic tourism offering that respects nature and people, today and in the future.

Our commitment

As part of the tourism strategy shared by Ticino Turismo and the four Regional Tourism Organisations (OTRs), with a 2030 horizon, sustainability is a key strategic priority. By taking part in various initiatives and working with a wide range of partners, Ticino Turismo is committed to reducing its environmental footprint and promoting more sustainable tourism across the destination. The strategy focuses on five priority areas: Climate and Nature, Mobility, Region and Identity, People, and Governance. Together with Quantis, a leading company in the field, Ticino Turismo and the OTRs have developed an action plan to position Ticino as a leading destination for sustainable tourism.

MY BLUE PLANET

In collaboration with the Ente Regionale per lo sviluppo del Mendrisiotto e Basso Ceresio, we launched a project with MyBluePlanet as part of the ClimateActions 4 Companies initiative. This initiative involves three regional parks (Parco del Penz, Parco delle Gole della Breggia, and Parco della Valle della Motta) with the goal of networking them to develop educational and informational content related to climate protection, with a particular focus on water and waste management.

The project's ultimate aim is to raise environmental awareness among both local and visiting park guests, encouraging greater climate-conscious behaviour and more sustainable choices in daily life.

AITI4Welfare

AITI4Welfare is a digital platform designed to foster a more engaged and productive organizational culture.

As part of our commitment to a more sustainable future, we have joined AITI4Welfare, an initiative promoted by the Ticino Industries Association (AITI) to support sustainable practices and enhance community well-being. This commitment translates into tangible actions to reduce environmental impact, promote the circular economy, and add value to our territory, contributing to a more eco-conscious tourism experience.

Swisstainable: join with our support

Switzerland Tourism coined the name “Swisstainable” by combining “Swiss” and “Sustainable”. The programme promotes sustainable development in Swiss tourism, highlights the commitments already made by businesses and destinations, and supports continuous improvement through clear requirements and concrete measures. The sustainability programme is open to all tourism businesses and organisations in Switzerland. To reflect different requirements and levels of commitment, it is divided into three levels. Swisstainable partners benefit from promotion and visibility through Switzerland Tourism, Ticino Turismo and the four Regional Tourism Organisations (OTRs), which are giving increasing prominence to participants in the programme. Follow the video tutorial for step-by-step guidance on how to join!

Guides to prepare for Swisstainable and examples of good practice To help tourism operators join Swisstainable, three practical guides have been developed for the Accommodation, Gastronomy and Attractions sectors. A collection of good practices provides ideas for the three measures required by Swisstainable, with examples that tourism operators can readily put into practice.

  • SIMPLIFIED CSR REPORT
    • The Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Handicrafts and Services of the Canton of Ticino (CC-Ti), in collaboration with SUPSI and the Department of Finance and Economy (DFE), has developed a simplified CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) reporting model.

The CSR report is a document that collects a company’s best practices, providing a framework to report on economic performance, social impact, and environmental responsibility.

Completing this report also allows the company to obtain a valid document for compliance with the LCPubb. If a declaration of conformity is available and the report has been published (i.e. at least 15 points have been achieved), it can be used as proof to reach Swisstainable Level II – engaged (in combination with another recognised certification).
