CINEMA...SENZA PAROLE!

On August 26, 2026, the Municipality and the Val Mara Culture Commission will offer an open-air cinema evening in Piazza G. Motta in Melano.

The film "Bergfilm!" will be screened, accompanied live by four musicians who will perform the soundtrack they specially composed as part of the "...without words!" project.

When early cinema and live music meet.

he Municipality and the Val Mara Cultural Commission are pleased to offer a special evening of film. In Piazza Giuseppe Motta in Melano, we will host the "...without words!" project, performed by the Quinn brothers (Brian, Simon, and Nolan) accompanied by pianist Johannes von Ballestrem.

In 2007, the group's professional paths, until then exclusively musical, intersected with cinema: an initial commission for the composition of a soundtrack for a silent film gave rise to an intense activity composing film music and developing new formats capable of transposing the live dimension, emblematic of music, into a cinematic context.

Today they collaborate with cinemas, film associations, film and music festivals, cultural and literary events, conferences, museums, libraries, and numerous other organizations, such as the Locarno Film Festival, Swiss Radio and Television, the Swiss National Park, the Swiss Alpine Club, the Graubünden Cantonal Library, and the Estonian Antarctic Expedition.

A portfolio of over twenty titles, including seminal works in the history of cinema, tours annually in Switzerland and Europe.

Bergfilm! Directed by Dr. Arnold Fanck, black and white, silent, German intertitles, 54 minutes. Original music by Simon, Nolan, and Brian Quinn for Swiss Alpine Club, Swiss Radio and Television, and Oggimusica. A selection of scenes without narrative continuity, taken from the work of Arnold Fanck, the inventor of mountain cinema, paints a picture of mountaineering a hundred years ago. Filmed on location and without stuntmen, future directors Luis Trenker and Leni Riefenstahl, here acting, test their skills on Alpine rock faces and glaciers (Matterhorn, Forno/Albigna, Bernina/Palü, Mont Blanc). Interspersed with these are some of the very first aerial shots on film, taken by German flying ace Ernst Udet.

We look forward to seeing you for a special evening in Melano's beautiful square!

In case of inclement weather, the screening will take place in the City Council Hall (Via Cantonale 89, 6818 Melano).
