UNESCO candidature

The candidacy dossier for the Holy Week Processions in Mendrisio was officially filed with UNESCO in Paris on 27 March 2018 with a view to its inclusion in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, which met in Bogotá (Colombia) for its fourteenth meeting, decided on 12 December 2019 to include the processions of Holy Week in Mendrisio in its representative list.

The efforts supported by the Fondazione Processioni Storiche, the relevant municipal and cantonal authorities and offices have been rewarded with the prestigious international recognition. These processions represent the Passion of Christ and are the bearers of a living tradition which, handed down from generation to generation, is expressed in particular through the creation of street lamps and illuminated canvases: the Trasparenti.
