Discover the processions

A tradition 400 years old

Holy Week processions in Mendrisio inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. These processions represent the Passion of Christ and are the bearers of a living tradition which, handed down from generation to generation, is expressed through the creation of lamps and illuminated transparencies: translucent paintings mounted on wooden frames.

If this isn’t enough to make you want to visit, then read on, you won’t regret it!

Museo Trasparente

Casa Croci, a small 19th-century architectural gem, house the Museo del Trasparente di Mendrisio (Mendrisio Illuminated Paintings Museum).

This is the first exhibition space devoted to one of the region’s most distinctive and extraordinary artistic and historic legacies: an age-old tradition that has led the Confederation to candidate the Historical Processions of Holy Week as world heritage associated with living traditions.
