The natural reserve of Pre Murin is a protected area registered in the Federal Inventory of the wetlands of national importance. It extends over an area of approx. 25 hectares (the equivalent of about 50 football fields) within a small valley between the villages of Ligornetto and Besazio.
The reserve is made up of an interesting mosaic of natural surroundings among which the following stand out: the wood, the wet areas (swamps), streams and extensive agricultural areas (meadows, fruit orchards and vineyards). Most of the reserve is covered by a mixed wood of broad-leaved trees (hornbeam, linden tree, common oak, false acacia, ash and chestnut). There are also small humid woods of black alder and groups of willows.
At the bottom of the valley is a large grove of reeds and two swamps of large carex, while on the Besazio side there are slope wetlands of small carex and sedge.
The streams run on a slope of chalky origin and here and there present outcrops of tuff; small waterfalls can be seen and even a small but striking cave. The streams create pleasant meanderings on the valley bottom.
Within the reserve intensive agriculture is carried out in some areas. This type of management encourages the presence of a large number of species both animal and vegetable.
A remarkable number of animal, vegetable and fungus species exist in the natural reserve of Pre Murin. Each plays an important role in the ecological balance of the area. Many of them are common, while others are special and protected.
