Long ago in 1844 Stefano Franscini, an important Ticinese statesman, suggested setting up an Academy in the Swiss Italian region.
The area is home to famous artists, painters, sculptors and architects like Francesco Borromini, Domenico Fontana, Carlo Maderno and contemporary Mario Botta, who did his best to have the Academy located in Mendrisio in 1996.
